BASIC PURPOSE: To assist skilled trade technicians by
performing a variety of unskilled maintenance and repair duties in one of the
building or mechanical trades.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Makes minor repairs
to buildings or plumbing systems and performs routine masonry work and welding.

Operates simple power
or hand tools, such as skill saws or drills.
·
Cleans, oils, greases
and makes minor repairs to equipment and machinery.
·
Cleans and maintain
work areas, buildings or vehicles.
·
Makes rough carpentry
repairs related to a variety of routine building projects.

DISTINGUISHING FACTORS:
Skill: Requires skill in applying instructions
to accomplish different job functions OR in operating machines for a variety of
different purposes.
Knowledge: Requires common sense understanding of
instructions in performing a series of routine procedures.
Impact: Requires minimal responsibility for
contributing to agency objectives by supporting or performing routine work
activities within a small organizational unit. Errors at this level are of minor consequence and are
readily detected through frequent checking or inspection.
Supervision: Requires no supervision of employees or
functions.
Working Conditions: Requires performing regular job
functions in an adverse working environment containing a combination of
disagreeable elements which impact significantly upon the employee's capacity
for completing work assignments.
This level includes work-related accidents or assault.
Physical Demands: Requires medium to heavy work,
including continuous physical exertion such as frequent bending, lifting or
climbing.
Communication: Requires minimal personal interaction
or communication, including providing simple information in response to routine
questions from employees within the agency.
Complexity: Requires a combination of job functions
using minimal judgment to perform a variety of job tasks according to clearly
prescribed standard practices and procedures.
Independent Action: Requires making a limited number of
choices in selecting among alternative courses of action under supervisory
guidance and in performing job functions according to a variety of prescribed
policies or procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of eighth grade or its
equivalent. Additional years of
formal education may not be substituted for the work experience required by this
class specification.
Experience: One year's experience as a laborer or
helper in work relating to any of the maintenance, building, mechanical or
construction trades. Additional
years of related work experience may not be substituted for the formal education
required by this class specification.
License/Certification: Valid New Hampshire driver's license
prior to completion of probationary period if required for picking up and
delivering vehicles for routine servicing and maintenance.
RECOMMENDED WORK TRAITS: Ability to understand and carry out
oral instructions. Ability to do
heavy manual work under hazardous conditions. Ability to use hand tools with reasonable degree of
skill. Ability to perform
semi-skilled tasks from detailed instructions. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working
relationships with co-workers and the general public. Must be willing to maintain appearance appropriate to
assigned duties and responsibilities as determined by the agency appointing
authority.
